The current flooding in the southern states reminds us of the powerful force of the mighty Mississippi River. The country’s longest river has a long history of disrupting communities and commerce, notably the floods of 1927 and 1993. For the majority of the year, however, the Mississippi River is critically important to the economic heart of the country, providing transportation, recreation, commerce and tourism.
