WCIJ receives grant from Evjue Foundation

The Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism has received a $5,000 grant from The Evjue Foundation, the Madison-based charitable arm of The Capital Times.

Evjue announced Tuesday that it will distribute $1.2 million to Madison-area educational, cultural and civic organizations.

According to Evjue, the grants total is “considerably less than what the foundation in past years has been able to give the nonprofit and educational communities in the Madison area.”

About one-third of the grants went to 22 projects at the University of Wisconsin. The remainder went to 56 Madison area community nonprofits, including the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism.

In announcing the awards, Evjue Foundation President John H. “Jack” Lussier pointed out that the foundation’s finances are derived from the controlling stock in The Capital Times Co. held by the late William T. Evjue, the founder and longtime editor and publisher of the newspaper.

“These have been trying times for the newspaper industry,” he said. “Consequently the Evjue Foundation’s revenues are down and that limits what we can return to the community.”

WCIJ is a nonprofit independent investigative news center based at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Journalism & Mass Communication. It produces investigative journalism in conjunction with its partners — the journalism school, Wisconsin Public Radio and Wisconsin Public Television.
